Rhodes Beginning – Various myths refer to the beginning of Rhodes,
but the most popular is about the division of the earth by the Greek god Zeus. According to this myth, when Zeus defeated the giants and became master of the earth, he decided to divide it between the gods of Mount Olympus. Hellios, the sun god, was absent during the casting and so the legend goes… No one remembered to include him in the draw’. When Hellios returned to his duties, he complained to Zeus about the injustice done to him. The father of the gods told him that he would cast the lots again but the radiant god would not let him. He asked only that Zeus and the other gods promise that any land that rises out of the sea would belong to Helios. As he spoke, there slowly emerged from the bottom of the deep blue sea an island profuse with flowers. It was Rhodes which until then had lain beneath the sea. Brimming with happiness, Helios bathed the island with his own radiance, and made it the most beautiful in the Aegean Sea.
