Panagia Tsambika Monastery Rhodes
About 25 km, south of Rhodes Town there is a beautiful and historical monastery
Panagia Tsambika Monastery Rhodes between Kolymbia and Archangelos village. The monastery is very old and built on top of a hill with a fantastic view to the beautiful and panoramic beach of Panagia Tsambika. Also, there is a new monastery too and is found on the road that connects Rhodes town and Archangelos. Rumours are saying that the old monastery was reconstructed by a monk in 1770, there was the historical icon of Panagia Tsambika, while some people were trying to transfer the icon somewhere else at another location, the icon by a miracle came back to the monastery. Some other rumours are saying that the monastery was burned and the only thing that was safe and not burned was the icon. Since then, the monastery was reconstructed and the miracle icon is there today, safe. The monastery’s name comes from the word Tsamba, it comes from the spark in a local dialect. Lots of people every year visits the monastery, especially childless women which they offer child dolls at the icon of Panagia. It is considered that the monastery is a protector of the island and that’s why many of the men at Rhodes are named Tsambikos and many women at Rhodes are named Tsambika.
