The Municipality of Archangelos Rhodes
is situated on the eastern side of the island, 35 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. It includes the two villages of Massari and Malona. It is said that Archangelos Rhodes was named after the village’s guardian saint, the Archangel Michael. The majority of the inhabitants are either shepherds or growers of vegetables, olives, or grapes. Over the recent past, tourism in the area has increased, motivating many residents to develop hotel units and meet other tourist needs. The area has many traditional houses with rich interiors.
The residents strive to preserve the local customs and many of them are still traditionally dressed.
Two monasteries are situated within the municipality: the monastery of Tsambika, perched on a cliff top some 300 metres high, and the Virgin of Lower Tsambika. Stegna beach lies 2 kilometres east of Archangelos. During the past few years, the area has been developed by its residents. A few small hotel units have been built, and traditional restaurants and friendly tavernas are now located by the beach. The nearby beautiful and evergreen village of Malona takes its name from the rich variety of Plants grown in its fertile soil: mileon means a good region of land where fruit trees grow in abundance. Villagers are mainly involved with agriculture or tourism.
The church at St.George, the ‘guardian saint of the village, is considered an important archaeological and historical monument. The belfry is 35 metres high and was built by the earliest inhabitants of the village. The area contains several monasteries: The Virgin Evangelistria, ‘St.lrini, St. George, The Holy Cross, and others. The area is also the site at the fortress of Faraklou, one at the biggest and oldest on the island. It is 33 kilometres from the city at Rhodes.
During the Archaic period (7th-6th centuries BC.) the Massari area was a centre of Greek civilisation and trade, especially in the Charaki region. The site has been protected for over 3000 years by the fortress of Faraklou. During the Classic period, the fortress was a military base and a hub of political interest. The Knights of St John used it for prisoners of war and other offenders. Nowadays the fort is almost in ruins. Finds in the area indicate the existence of an ancient settlement. Various remains of buildings, marble artefacts and other architectural elements have been found there, suggesting it sheltered an early Christian community.
Malona is a near neighbour to Massari village, which is surrounded by hills and wooded valleys. The ground is very fertile and the produce grown includes high-quality crops such as olives. Both social and tourist lite has increased over recent years. 4 kilometres north-west of Massari village is the monastery of Kamiri, built in honour of the Virgin Kamiriotisso. It has impressive frescoes. Charaki is considered as the tourist resort of Malona and Massari villages. It is 40 kilometres from the city of Rhodes. The beach here is of small pebbles and directly focus Lindos. Tourism has advanced here recently and there are many hotels, rooms for rent, and restaurants to cater for a large number of visitors during the summer months.
