A succulent, cactus-like shrub or small tree, about 2 to 5 m tall. Branchlets are hairy when young. In the Maldives, it is grown as a shade and ornamental tree. Propagation is mainly by seeds but hard and woody seeds take very long period to germinate. It performs well in all kinds of soils and withstands any amount of drought but is less tolerant to wet soil. Common in home gardens. Old branches are hairless.

Willowleaf ,a large shrub at 15 feet tall, has long, twisting leaves. When they reach the height you want, just clip off the leader. They appear in large clusters on the previous year's growth. They will last until early spring if the birds do not get them.

Bushy dense and rounded, Chinese Hollies grow from 4 to 25 feet tall, although typically they are about 9 feet tall. When they reach the height you want, just clip off the leader.
